Greenland defense deal signed
NEW YORK — President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, an agreement amending and supplementing the 27 April 1951 Defense Agreement on Greenland, according to the full text published the same day by the White House and same-day Associated Press reporting carried by PBS News. AP via PBS and Breaking Defense place the ceremony on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly after Trump’s Assembly address; the White House text states “Done at New York on the 22nd day of September, 2026.”
What the signed text enables, as the White House publication states: the United States “shall be allowed to modernize and expand its activities in Pituffik Space Base”; “shall be allowed to establish an additional Defense Area at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig in accordance with modalities and technical details to be mutually agreed by the Parties”; and may establish additional defense areas by mutual agreement. Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig modalities remain mutually agreed — the text carries no construction schedule or force levels.
Entry into force is not automatic on signature. “This Agreement shall enter into force on the date of a diplomatic note informing the United States of the completion of necessary parliamentary procedures by the Kingdom of Denmark together with Greenland.” As of the White House publication and same-day wires, that note has not been reported as delivered — signed, not yet in force.

Nixon, R-Calif., salvaged his vice presidential nomination by appearing on television from Los Angeles to refute allegations of improper campaign fundraising in what became known as the “Checkers” speech for its reference to his family’s cocker spaniel. The same date in 1806, the Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis, more than two years after setting out for the Pacific Northwest.
